From "The " Men "of The Lews." by Rev Norman C. Macfarlane.

"Alexander Montgomery lived in Sheshader . He was a reserved and somewhat silent man , with a handsome figure and finely chiselled features . The Vicar of Wakefield said the book his daughters read most assiduously was the "looking glass."Alexander Montgomery might br excused if he often consulted the same volume . It would speak forth to him nothing but what was pleasing . Yet I should not be surprised if Alexander Montgomery did not have a looking glass in his house . Yet when I think of his clean -shaven face a mirror was surely necessary . He was tall , and well proportioned and exceedingly modest . His voice was not heard in public as often as it merited . He was a thinker and ruminated much . Yet when he did speak , he was like the Venetian painters who mixed gold with their colours . His was a voice prized for its freshness and wisdom .
